Its really not that hard (although the virtual carts are a bit difficult to control). Make sure you have a Petco Pals card or register one when your done playing the game.
There are a TON of items for less than $5 at Petco, so you can find stuff for free. Petco has a ton of items for Dogs, Cats and Fish. There are also some items for Gerbals, Birds and other smaller animals.
